Family Photo Locations In Whistler
Planning a family vacation can be a lot, and adding in the logistics of a family photo shoot can feel a bit overwhelming.
This blog shares a list of Whistler family photo locations to help you make one of the big decisions related to family photos easier.
Best time of year for family photos in Whistler
Let’s be clear, the best time of year for family photos in Whistler is when you’re in Whistler.
Done.
Buuuuutttt….
In case you’re a Pacific Northwesterner who is planning a long weekend in Whistler, here’s a quick breakdown of what to expect in each season.
Fall
The parks are usually pretty quiet once the weather turns. The winds pick up, and the forecast becomes a bit more unpredictable.
Fall is the best time of year to capture the changing leaf colours while enjoying fewer crowds. Especially if you aren’t fussed by a little bit of rain.
Winter
The best time of year for a snowy backdrop for your Whistler family photos. Come prepared with warm + waterproof layers, which will make the photoshoot far more enjoyable for everyone.
Access to some of the parks can be limited, and some are not maintained in the winter. There won't be as many crowds, though the holidays could be busier than usual.
Spring
As the weather warms and the flowers bloom, Spring is the perfect time to visit any of the waterfalls in and around Whistler. As the snowpack melts, all the waterfalls are gushing.
Also fairly quiet in terms of crowds, there can be the odd busy day by the lake if there’s an unexpectedly hot spring day.
Summer
It doesn't get better than blue skies, green forest + turquoise lakes as a backdrop for your family photos.
Often recommended for morning shoots, as the more popular parks will be very busy.
Scenic Spots for a Family Photoshoot in Whistler
Some of my fave Whistler family photography locations, each offering something a little different to match your family’s vibe or vision for your photos.
Rainbow Park
This popular park is a short 15-minute drive from the Village. It offers views of Whistler, Blackcomb, Wedge, and the other Fitzsimmons Range mountains.
A beach, a couple of docks, railroad tracks + trails create a great variety of backdrops, making this one of the better options for familyphotos in Whistler, especially if you want a mix of mountain and lakeside views.
Lost Lake Trails
A 5km loop from the Village, this easy hike along paved/groomed trails is a popular one during the summer due to its proximity to the village.
We can either meet at a specific place around Lost Lake or walk a part of it (like from the Village to the park) and take photos along the way—perfect if you're looking for more relaxed, walking-style Whistler family photos.
Train Wreck
In the Cheakamus neighbourhood, about 10km south of the Village, this 2km round-trip hike leads through the forest and over a suspension bridge to the site of the 1958 train crash.
Perfect for families with adventurous kids who can’t sit still for long.
Note: Trails are not maintained in the winter and can be icy and slippery. Spikes are recommended
Meadow Park
Behind the community centre, you will find an open field along the River of Golden Dreams.
With views of Whistler, Blackcomb and the river, with groomed trails, this location is great if you don’t want to go too far from the village for your Whistler family photos.
Rainbow Falls
A short hike from the trailhead leads you to views of Rainbow Falls. A 10–15 minute drive from the Village, this location is a great option if you have kiddo(s) with lots of energy.
You can walk the 2.2km loops before the session to burn off some energy or use it as a post-photoshoot treat/promise. It’s also a great choice if you’re open to slightly more adventurous family photo locations in Whistler.
Note: Rainbow Falls is only open April - November.
