The Best Time of Day for Family Photos in Whistler

One of the most common questions I get when it comes to planning family photos - What time should we start?

The answer might surprise you.

While my preference is usually golden hour, my favourite time for your family photos is whenever your kiddo is happiest.

Work With When Your Kiddo's Happiest

If your little one is happiest after their morning nap, let's photograph then.

If they're all smiles after lunch, let's start then instead.

Following your kiddo's natural rhythm usually means everyone has a better time—including you.

After all, I'd rather have a happy toddler in slightly brighter light than a tired toddler during "perfect" golden hour.

Because at the end of the day, happy always photographs better.

Why Photographers Love Golden Hour

That said... there is a reason photographers get excited about golden hour.

The sun sits lower in the sky, creating soft, warm light that makes literally everyone look good.

But did you know that there are actually two golden hours every day?

Evening Golden Hour

This is the one most people think of.

That magical hour before sunset.

Although here in Whistler, that's not technically true.

Because we're tucked into a valley surrounded by mountains, the sun disappears behind the mountains well before the official sunset time, and varies depending on where in the valley you are.

At the time I'm writing this, sunset is listed as 9:26 p.m., but the sun drops behind the mountains near my house shortly after 8 p.m.

One thing to keep in mind with evening sessions is that summer in Whistler is busy.

On warm, sunny evenings, the parks, lakes, and docks are often full of swimmers, paddleboarders, and sunbathers.

Morning Golden Hour

The other golden hour happens first thing in the morning.

Or, in Whistler's case, shortly after the sun peeks over the mountains.

I'll be honest...

If you're hoping for photos at one of Whistler's more popular lakes or parks during the summer, morning golden hour is one of my favourite times to shoot.

The light is beautiful, the parks are noticeably quieter, and if your kids are naturally early risers, it often works surprisingly well.

Other Great Options Throughout the Year

If you love the look of golden hour but don't love keeping your little ones awake until 8:30 p.m. in the middle of summer, (or start at 6 am), you're definitely not alone.

One of the nice things about family photos in Whistler is that the seasons naturally shift our start times.

Evening start times can look something like this:

  • Spring: around 6:00 p.m.

  • Summer: morning golden hour or later evenings

  • Fall: around 5:00–5:30 p.m.

  • Winter: around 4:00 p.m.

If you're flexible with when you schedule your session, it's much easier to find a time that works for both beautiful light and your family's routine.

So... What's the Best Time of Day for Family Photos in Whistler?

Honestly?

Whenever your family is going to have the most fun.

Beautiful light is great, but relaxed, happy kids will always make a bigger difference than the best light.

We'll find a time that works for your family, your little ones, and the kind of vibes you’re going for.
